E's Reviews: Captain Marvel

Captain Marvel, the latest entry into the Marvel Cinematic Universe, was directed by Anna Boden, Ryan Fleck, and stars Brie Larson, Samuel L. Jackson, Ben Mendelsohn, Jude Law, and Lashana Lynch. This story is the origin of Captain Marvel as she becomes one of the universe's most powerful heroes when Earth is caught in the middle of a galactic war between two alien races, the Kree and the Skrulls.

Before I go into everything I liked and didn't like, let me start by saying this: the media and the marketing are way off. The Rotten Tomatoes audience scores are way off, as we all know that this movie is being hate bombed for one reason or another, and that makes me, as a critic, very sad. So regardless what I say, regardless what anyone says about any movie ever, if you're interested in a film, go check it out for yourself and form your own opinion. With that being said...let's get right into it.

The bad: not much here was bad. I felt some of the performances were a little bit on the cheesy side, the script could've used a bit more polish, but otherwise everything felt pretty solid. The 3rd act felt kind of rushed, maybe with a little bit longer run time, it could've pulled off something pretty special.

As for the good, and there's a lot of it, the direction was pretty damn solid. The team of Boden and Fleck pulled off a very fun, very awesome film, with a strong female protagonist, interesting villains, and a damn good twist (which I won't ruin). The film looked pretty good, with some great CGI effects, some very good make up effects (seriously, the Skrulls look great!) They really did capture the 90s, too, with the music, the technology, the Blockbuster...it reminded me of when I was a kid, which was pretty cool. There was a bit of controversy after the trailers that Brie Larson wasn't showing any kind of emotion...but let me tell you, she shows off plenty of emotion in this film. She's actually pretty solid as Carol Danvers, she was great! Also, Samuel L. Jackson and Goose the cat? They're awesome! I finally understood all the hype surrounding the damn cat. Ben Mendelsohn is solid as Talos, leader of the Skrulls. Jude Law is great. Really, the entire cast in this one is fantastic. The action sequences are great, the jokes are fun, it's just a fun film packed with what you'd expect from a Marvel film.

As for tying into the rest of the MCU, I felt like there was a plot hole somewhere that I missed. I might have to re-watch the MCU films so I can get a clear sense of the timelines, because it does get a bit confusing. Other than that, I'm definitely seeing it again, I definitely recommend this movie to Marvel and superhero fans in general. Check it out, it's in theaters now!

Final Score: 8.5/10
