E's Reviews: Greta

Yes...a reason...chosen for a reason...uh...sorry, I blanked out. Just like I did during the movie...

Greta was directed by Neil Jordan, stars Isabelle Huppert and Chloë Grace Moretz as Frances, a sweet, naïve young woman trying to make it on her own in New York City, who doesn't think twice about returning the handbag she finds on the subway to its rightful owner. That owner is Greta (Isabelle Huppert), an eccentric French piano teacher with a love for classical music and an aching loneliness. Having recently lost her mother, Frances quickly grows closer to widowed Greta. The two become fast friends, but Greta's maternal charms begin to dissolve and grow increasingly disturbing as Frances discovers that nothing in Greta's life is what it seems.

Now, I won't ruin the twist (which does happen pretty damn quick in the first act), but I will talk about the things I didn't like...which are plenty. This movie to me was just so damn boring. Not much about it left a lasting impression on me. The acting wasn't particularly bad, but it also wasn't groundbreaking or fantastic, it was just fine. Chloë Grace Moretz has proven herself a pretty great young actress, and she's just okay in this movie, which makes me think that the script maybe had a lot to do with it, or the directing, I couldn't really tell which. The supporting cast are there to basically just voice what the audience is thinking, and that to me felt pretty lazy. The worst part of the movie to me, was the editing. There are a lot of jump cuts that felt kind of mind numbing to me, which sort of killed the pacing and made me feel so damn bored.

The musical score was alright, and the cinematography was passable for a film. Like, this movie really is watchable. It's not that it's all bad, you know? Isabelle Huppert is amazing as Greta. She puts on the only redeemable performance in the entire film, and gets downright creepy with her fascination in Frances.

So is this a bad movie? Not really, but it's also not a great movie. It's just okay. I could see myself watching this during an afternoon when I have nothing to do and it comes out on TV. If you're curious about it, go check it out for yourself. Greta is in theaters now.

Final Score: 5/10
