E's Reviews: Overlord

OVERLORD was written by Billy Ray and Mark L. Smith, directed by Julius Avery, and stars Jovan Adepo, Wyatt Russell (yes, son of Kurt Russell and Goldie Hawn), and Mathilde Ollivier. On the eve of D-Day, American paratroopers are dropped behind enemy lines to carry out a mission crucial to the invasion's success. But as they approach their target, they begin to realize there is more going on in this Nazi-occupied village than a simple military operation. They find themselves fighting against supernatural forces, part of a Nazi experiment.

And hot diggity dang what a movie! This review may be short because...as hard as I could try, I did not find anything wrong with it. Not one thing. Maybe the length because I didn't want it to end? I saw the trailers a while ago at a screening for another movie, then read the press-releases that this was going to be a Cloverfield film, and then they said it wasn't (which was confusing the heck out of everyone everywhere) and what did we get from Overlord? A movie that plays out like a damn video game. It's like Wolfenstein and Gears of War had a child, and what we got was Overlord.

Let's go over some of the things that are great, shall we? For one, this cast is brilliant. Every actor was superb, especially Wyatt Russell and Jovan Adepo. These two carried this film and made everything they did extremely entertaining to watch. I'm almost certain this will be recognized as Wyatt Russell's push into super stardom, as he showed off shades of a younger version of his famous dad's intensity (seriously, he was amazing). Then we have Jovan Adepo, a relative new-comer to film who has been in mostly television series. He was extremely entertaining to watch and was without a doubt one of the films biggest surprises as the main lead. The cinematography and the special effects showcased what Hell World War 2 was like, never going too over the top with the CGI and never letting go. I want to also say that the supporting cast was very entertaining to watch.

Like I said in the beginning, there's very little issue I had with this film. I went in not really expecting much, and instead I got one of the most entertaining films of 2018. It has all the intensity and action a war movie fan is looking for, combined with the scares and gore that horror and sci-fi fans love. It's fun, it's self-aware, and it's just jam-packed with epic action and fun. It's out this weekend so go check it out! I'm seeing it as much as I can!

Final Score: 10/10
