Zo's Reviews: Godzilla - King of the Monsters (Minor Spoilers Ahead!)
GODZILLA - KING OF THE MONSTERS was directed by Michael Dougherty and stars Kyle Chandler, Vera Farmiga, Millie Bobby Brown, and is about the crypto-zoological agency Monarch, as they face off against a battery of god-sized monsters, including the mighty Godzilla, who collides with Mothra, Rodan, and his ultimate nemesis, the three-headed King Ghidorah. There are also some bad people doing bad things, thinking that the resurgence of the Titans (as they're called in this franchise) need to be brought back in order to fix the planet. So...was this movie any good? Let's get to the technical stuff...
The bad? The story is kind of a dumb one. I mean, they had to find some reason to get these gigantic creatures that can wipe us out at any given moment a reason to fight eachother, right? So why not use the old "humanity is a virus and the Titans are the cure" method! It's...pretty stupid. I could not believe that human beings could be so cold as to just unleash these things that can wipe us all out on the Earth to save the Earth...it's the biggest problem I've got with the movie. And before people cry out "SPOILER!" this entire plot was already shown in the trailer, so there! That's more or less the only thing I had an issue with the movie...the human side. The acting was just okay, and I had a similar problem with the first Godzilla movie in this new franchise. As for the rest?
The visuals are insane! Mothra's birth is gorgeous, Rodan bursting out from the volcano is one that'll stick with me forever, Ghidorah appearing and lightning bursting forth from his body...there's just too many sequences and scenes that had me in awe of what I was watching. The action sequences and monster fights were crazy to see, the CGI felt almost organic at times. The movie had some fun moments, with characters delivering some pretty funny lines to kind of off-set the overly serious script. The score is also something to behold, every time a new Titan was shown on screen, the scope of their existence is only heightened by the music.
This movie was definitely one made for the fans. You can tell Dougherty didn't make this to appease the rabid critics of the Internet or the major news outlets. He did this for the fans, for the people who love Godzilla and crave more of these kinds of big monster movies. It delivers exactly what we wanted...to watch Godzilla kick the ever loving crap out of other monsters. This film is in theaters now, go check it out for yourself!
FINAL SCORE: 9/10
