Zo's Reviews: Men In Black International
Gone are Will Smith and Tommy Lee Jones from the original Men In Black trilogy. So how does the rebooted film do keeping the world they helped build alive? Let's find out...
MEN IN BLACK INTERNATIONAL was directed by F. Gary Gray and stars Chris Hemsworth, Tessa Thompson, Liam Neeson, Emma Thompson, and Kumail Nanjiani (his voice at least), as the Men In Black, an organization above and beyond the the normal government organization, protecting mankind from the enemies beyond our planet. But this time, they must contend with a threat they've never had to face before: a mole inside the organization that is hell-bent on destroying the Earth and anyone that gets in their path. Oh, and it takes place internationally (hence the title).
So the story sounds like it should be pretty exciting, right? I know I was when I got my tickets in advance after seeing the trailer. I've been a huge fan of the series since seeing the original MIB films when I was younger. I'm also a fan of this cast. But what I got...well...The story suffers from a few lulls in any action or comedy which fueled the previous films in the franchise (and yes, this is a franchise now). The acting felt uninspired, sometimes even seeming a bit robotic or the actors were bored. I could feel myself coming in and out of the movie as it went, which is something I hate. I want a movie to engross me entirely in it's world and never let go until the end...
That being said, I did enjoy some aspects of this movie. Hemsworth and Tessa Thompson are great together, playing off the same chemistry they had in Thor: Ragnarok and they prove that they can make a pretty good comedic duo. The movie has some cute moments with the alien Pawny (voiced by Kumail Nanjiani). I found a lot of the comedic moments to be entertaining enough that it made me chuckle. The CGI was what you'd expect out of one of these movies now. The aliens were actually pretty cool (I was totally losing it over a beard alien...yes...an alien frikkin beard...).
So the question I asked before was...does this reboot do a good job keeping this world of aliens and shady government organizations alive? It does an okay job, it's even kinda cute. The film suffers from some uninspired direction, but was definitely carried by the cast. Kids will definitely enjoy this one, or if you're in need of some nostalgia viewing, I highly recommend checking it out. It's a decent entry in the franchise.
FINAL SCORE: 7/10
