E's Reviews: Avengers - Infinity War
So earlier today (12/7/2018) we got a glimpse, and FINALLY a title, for Avengers 4 aka Avengers - Endgame, and I thought 'hey, why not re-examine and review Avengers - Infinity War?' So here's my review on my favorite of the Avengers trilogy of films, and this goes without saying...but there will be major spoilers throughout. You've been warned!
AVENGERS - INFINITY WAR was directed by Anthony and Joe Russo (who also directed Captain America - The Winter Soldier...my favorite of all of the MCU films...and Captain America - Civil War) and stars Robert Downey Jr., Tom Holland, Chris Evans, Chris Hemsworth, Chris Pratt, Zoe Saldana, Don Cheadle, Mark Ruffalo, Scarlett Johansson, Benedict Cumberbatch, Dave Bautista, Vin Diesal, Karen Gillen, Elizabeth Olsen, Josh Brolin, Chadwick Boseman, Tom Hiddleston, Paul Bettany, Anthony Mackie, Sebastian Stan, Idris Elba, Pom Klementieff, Peter Dinklage, Bradley Cooper, Gwyneth Paltrow, Benicio Del Toro, Letitia Wright, and Stan Lee (RIP). As you can see by that list of stars...this film has some major star power behind it. Anyways, the mad Titan, Thanos, has a plot that's been building up 'til now, as he goes around the cosmos collecting the Infinity Stones (those things you saw in the other MCU movies) so he can cull our universe, his plan to eradicate half of all living things. The Avengers must now come back together, putting aside their differences after Civil War, to stop Thanos and save all of creation.
If you've read my reviews in the past, you know I like to start with technical aspects, usually talking about what's good or bad. So let's dig into the bad...there was some pretty bad CGI. There are moments where you are watching the screen and thinking to yourself 'man, they could've made that villain look so much scarier with some conventional make-up effects...' And it's true. Thanos aside (cause he looked really cool...) his lackeys look kind of goofy, especially if you've stuck with the MCU films up until now. Another thing I had an issue with was the scrip, although because of the length and the tone that could be the reason, was a lack of comedy (Thor and the Guardians aside...which left me almost on the floor I was laughing so hard). Another thing I and most other fans had an issue with, was why some characters were left out (where's Hawkeye? Where's Ant-Man?) Some of these things are more or less just nit-picks and as we saw with the first Avengers Endgame teaser today, and after seeing Ant-Man and The Wasp, we know more about where these characters are at.
As for the good? This is a very slick, very badass, very cool looking film. The action sequences are tight and reminded me of one of the many huge battles from one of Peter Jackson's Middle Earth films. The acting is, as expected, on par with the rest of the MCU films, and dare I say even better? Some of the actors have grown so accustomed to performing with the counterparts, that their chemistry over the last decade has gotten way way better. There are some extremely heartbreaking moments in this movie, too. Vision being blown apart by his love, then being reborn only to die again? Thanos needing to kill the only thing he loves in order to get the Soul Stone? Groot...dying...again....and then there's the "Mr. Stark...? I don't feel so good..." line that had me in tears. This film is very devastating for a lot of fans for a lot of reasons, and that's exactly what was needed in the MCU. Considering what was supposed to happen (*snaps fingers*) there was no other way this could've gone down. This was meant to be the MCU's version of The Empire Strikes Back, arguably the greatest Star Wars film of all, and a movie that removes all sense of hope. This was it for Marvel. This was their swan song.
Considering we had an amazing end credits scene, watching Samuel L Jackson's Nick Fury as he turns to dust and contacting their trump card from outer space, it's safe to assume that in the upcoming CAPTAIN MARVEL film, we'll definitely be seeing a connection to Infinity War. We also saw that in Ant-Man and The Wasp (which was a ton of fun, definitely go see it and bring the kids!) Endgame itself looks like it'll bring back that lost hope, it looks like our heroes will be back and ready to go (did you guys see that Hawkeye was back in his Ronin outfit?! OMG!) and Thanos will have to answer to the might of the Avengers! In the end, this is my favorite of the Avengers trilogy, it's definitely up there in my top 3 of the MCU films (#1 being Captain America - The Winter Soldier, #2 being Thor - Ragnarok) and it is definitely a shocking film, it brings the emotion, it has a strong impact, and there's a ton of action and sci-fi fun to keep everyone entertained. Definitely check this out on digital outlets, or go out and get the entire MCU films. Have a marathon. I mean, we got til April, right? Let's get it started (by the way, the first one in the MCU films is Iron Man...check that one out, it's a blast too!)
Final Score: 9.5/10
