Zo's Reviews: Annabelle Comes Home
This time...she comes home...to scare the living crap out of us!
Annabelle Comes Home was directed by Gary Dauberman and stars Vera Farmiga, Patrick Wilson, Mckenna Grace, Madison Iseman, and Katie Sarife, and takes place right after that opening sequence from The Conjuring and happens during the events of that film. The film centers around the Warren's daughter, Judy, and her teenage babysitters, as the latter unknowingly unleash the demonic Annabelle in the Warren household. She wreaks havoc on the babysitter, her friends, and Judy. They must come together, overcome their fears and grief, to put the doll back in her case, and trap the evil that has been unleashed.
So was this a good movie? I mean, it's definitely not the worst entry in the franchise. It's also not the best entry in the franchise. But I have to say...I didn't hate this movie. I also had a hard time viewing it...and I'll get more into that but first, as per the usual...what did I find were the weaknesses in this film. There's this subplot in the story that could have had potential to really push the story forward, make it a deeper film, develop the character of Judy a bit more...but instead, it goes nowhere. We catch a glimpse here, a glimpse there, but nothing of note really comes of it, and that was something that truly annoyed me. Maybe I missed the point of that happening. Truly, that's the only real issue I had with the movie (and it's a big one...)
As for the good? Like Annabelle Creation, I truly did enjoy this film. The tension was real (had me walking out of the movie to catch my breath for a moment...) and I found myself covering my eyes sometimes. I don't really know what came over me, but my anxiety levels were at an all-time high during this viewing. The scares were legitimate, each sequence of tension just building up until the demon or evil spirits attack. The acting from this group was really quite good, and I was surprised Vera Farmiga and Patrick Wilson, who have INCREDIBLE on-screen chemistry as the Warrens, had such a large role in this film. The score was fantastic, and one I hope I can find for my collection. The cinematography was great. It truly did terrify.
Annabelle Comes Home is a great (but not perfect) entry into the Conjuring universe of films. The story was solid, acting great, music great, but story could've used some work. It's in theaters now, check it out now!
FINAL SCORE: 8/10
