E's Reviews: Shazam!
SHAZAM! was directed by David F. Sandberg and stars Asher Angel as Billy Batson, a streetwise 14-year old foster kid who is bestowed the magical powers of a wizard and becomes a superhero when he utters the magic word, Shazam (Zachary Levi)! Also starring in this epic adventure is Djimon Hounsou, Mark Strong, and Jack Dylan Grazer.
As I always begin my reviews, I usually tend to talk about the bad stuff. I couldn't really nail down much except that this movie needed to be MAYBE a little more serious? I dunno. Maybe the CGI wasn't that great? Nah. Um...the acting? No. Directing? Nope....music? Sure, let's go with the music...the music needed...work...? I honestly can't tell if there is anything bad about this movie. Maybe it did need a bit more drama to work?
Anyways, let's go with the good stuff...which is everything. The visuals are fun, not overblown and in your face as some superhero movies tend to be. The acting from the entire cast (including the kids and a few that I won't spoil here) was amazing. They were fun to watch and I'm super glad a few of them finally got their chance to be in a superhero film! The script went from cheesy to serious to comedic to...it was just a fun script and a fun film all the way around. The cinematography in this movie actually kind of blew me away a few times, especially when they showed off the more beautiful scenery in Philadelphia. There are a few Easter eggs in this film, which I won't ruin, and nods to other DCU films (also won't ruin) for the viewers to feast on and discover.
This is a near perfect entry into DC's new run of cinematic adventures. They seem to be leaning more towards family friendly, fun action films (Wonder Woman, Aquaman, Shazam) and trying to be less serious, less gritty, less realistic, but also respecting the core of the former films that have already come before them. As I said, the characters are all fun to watch, the action is great, the villain is fantastic, the jokes are great. This is just a fun family film and I highly recommend you bring your kids to it, or just go and let your inner kid run wild! You'll have a great time either way! It's out this weekend in cinemas everywhere!
Final Score: 9/10
