Zo's Reviews: The Curse of La Llorona

Image
The Curse of La Llorona was directed by Michael Chaves, and stars Linda Cardellini as a CPS worker/single mom, who must defend her children from a supernatural being of despair, one that is after her two children, after the death of two children she was assigned to be the caseworker of. With a faith healer, they battle the entity, to save the souls of her children...Oh, also, it's a Conjuring Universe tie-in. Yeah, the priest from Annabelle? He's in this one. So those of you who have read my reviews in the past know, I didn't particularly love the last Conjuring Universe film (The Nun). It didn't have enough tension, it had way too many jump scares, and was altogether forgettable. I saw the trailers for this film and I actually got a bit excited...it felt like there was going to be more tense moments, more build up to the scares, and since I am married to a lovely woman of Mexican heritage, I was amped up for this tale that had to do with a lot of the stories she h...

Zo's Reviews: Hellboy (2019)

Image
HELLBOY (2019)  was directed by Neil Marshall and stars David Harbour, Milla Jovovich, Ian McShane, Sasha Lane and Daniel Dae Kim, and has a pretty simple plot... Evil witch (Milla Jovovich) wants revenge against mankind for something that happened to her way way back when (think King Arthur times) and there's a prophecy (as expected) where Hellboy joins forces with her and they bring about the end of the world...yeah, simple. Now it's up to Hellboy to make a choice: defend mankind as he has been for years, or join the evil witch. The bad? This movie. The entire movie is a giant clusterf*ck of insanity and campy cheese. But that's besides the point...there are some weird jump cuts that really don't make sense, and you've got these strange edits in the film that made me go "really...? But how'd they get to this point...?" Because of this strange editing style, the pacing feels rushed. It feels like this movie should've taken a darker, slower p...

The Hunger

Image
Have you ever felt a hunger so strongly...that it brings you to the brink of sanity? Something that gnaws on you? Something that slithers through your mind like an addiction...that tells you that you must feed? I feel that every single day. I sit quietly, watching people...eating their cattle and their pheasant, indulging in everything that this world has to offer them. They combine it with the crunch of various vegetables, maybe the warmth of a soup...Oh, how I wish I could feel that warmth. If only I could eat... To bite down on flesh, rip it, gnaw the bone, break it and suck out the marrow...much like this man I once saw. He gnawed on a rib of what I assume was cattle, broke the ends off, and sucked on the marrow. For a child, it was an odd thing to see, until my own father allowed me to give in to my curiosity and try it for myself. It was the most delicious thing I had ever eaten... But now? Now I cannot indulge in the delicacies of this world. I mustn't. It's not ...

E's Reviews: Pet Sematary (2019)

Image
So...Pet Sematary.........sigh.... PET SEMATARY (2019) was directed by Kevin Kölsch, Dennis Widmyer, and stars Jason Clarke, Amy Seimetz, and John Lithgow, and is about Dr. Louis Creed and his wife, Rachel, who relocate from Boston to rural Maine (not Derry...but it could be Derry...) with their two young children. The couple soon discover a mysterious burial ground hidden deep in the woods near their new home. But beyond the burial ground, the land is sour...and sometimes...dead is better. OOOoOOOoOO SPOOKY!!! Yeah, this is gonna be one of those reviews, where I just go off and rant like a crazy person or something...I guess...but let's go through the technical stuff before I go off on a tangent and lose my mind. The bad...and there is a bit of bad...For starters, there's an intriguing mythological element to this movie that just never gets fully realized. They could've just said "screw the book" and created their own adaptation of the novel. But instead...

E's Reviews: Shazam!

Image
SHAZAM!  was directed by David F. Sandberg and stars Asher Angel as Billy Batson, a streetwise 14-year old foster kid who is bestowed the magical powers of a wizard and becomes a superhero when he utters the magic word, Shazam (Zachary Levi)! Also starring in this epic adventure is Djimon Hounsou, Mark Strong, and Jack Dylan Grazer. As I always begin my reviews, I usually tend to talk about the bad stuff. I couldn't really nail down much except that this movie needed to be MAYBE a little more serious? I dunno. Maybe the CGI wasn't that great? Nah. Um...the acting? No. Directing? Nope....music? Sure, let's go with the music...the music needed...work...? I honestly can't tell if there is anything bad about this movie. Maybe it did need a bit more drama to work? Anyways, let's go with the good stuff...which is everything. The visuals are fun, not overblown and in your face as some superhero movies tend to be. The acting from the entire cast (including the kids ...
